01How it works

From booking to certificate

The MOT is a yearly check that your car meets the legal standards for safety and emissions set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

  1. Book a slot

Call us or send a booking request with your registration and the day that suits you. We’re often busy, so it pays to book ahead.

    • You can have the test up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out and keep the same renewal date.
  2. The test

Your car is inspected against the DVSA’s standards, from lights and brakes to tyres, steering, seatbelts and emissions.

  3. Your result

A pass gets your MOT certificate. Any faults are listed by how serious they are, along with advisories to keep an eye on.

  4. Repairs and retest

If something fails, we explain each item and quote for the work. Once it’s fixed, we retest.

02What’s checked

What the MOT looks at

The main areas the tester inspects. Open one to see what they’re looking for.

  • Close-up of a car headlight

Headlights, indicators, brake, fog and reversing lights are checked for condition, operation and colour, and the headlights for aim.

  • Wheel on the MOT brake tester rollers

Braking performance is tested, and the pads, discs, pipes, hoses and handbrake are checked for condition and wear.

  • Alloy wheel and tyre close up

Tread must be at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Tyres and wheels are also checked for damage, size and security.

  • Car raised on a lift in the workshop

Steering components, shock absorbers, springs and their mountings are checked for wear, damage and excess play.

  • Car body structure and chassis rails

The underside and load-bearing areas are checked for serious corrosion or damage. Sharp edges that could injure someone also fail.

  • Engine bay with a diagnostic lead connected

The exhaust must be secure and free of serious leaks, and emissions are measured against the limits for your car’s age and fuel type.

Also checked

  • Seatbelts and seats
  • Windscreen, wipers and washers
  • Horn, mirrors and doors
  • Registration plates and VIN

The MOT doesn’t check the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. That’s what regular servicing is for.

03If it fails

What a fail means, and what happens next

Results are graded so you know what needs doing now and what can wait.

Dangerous
A fail. The car shouldn’t be driven until it’s repaired.
Major
A fail. It must be repaired before the car can pass.
Minor
A pass, but it should be repaired soon.
Advisory
A pass. Something to keep an eye on.

“Car failed its MOT miserably. Provided a long list of the items, car rebooked in 4 days later, all items fixed, MOT retest (no advisories), and picked car back up at 4.45pm. Even came in cheaper than original quote.”
